HPV vaccine
Merck & Co. has created a vaccine called Gardasil which they claim protects against four types of HPV. This could be a huge breakthrough in sexual health because HPV is the most common sexually transmitted disease and can cause genital warts and cervical cancer. The vaccine would be given by three shots over six months, preferrably before a female becomes sexually active. Members of an FDA advisory panel are expected to recommend the drug for FDA approval later today. The efficacy of the vaccine in women already infected with HPV is being debated. After FDA approval, the national Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices will have to decide whether to recommend routine vaccination, and if so, at what age. The vaccine has sparked controversy, with some people saying vaccination would promote sexual promiscuity. Thankfully, these arguments have ceased to gain any momentum. As with any new drug, Gardasil will be expensive at an estimated $300-$500. Obviously, this poses a barrier to access. Since cervical cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer in women, it is important that we figure out a way to provide this vaccine for all women!
