First update of the year!

Hello Ladies!

This is the first Vox update of the year! I want to start by introducing myself and our new vice president. I am Erin Cummin and am the president for 2006. Sarah Sansom is vice president and is also currently acting as treasurer. I have a number of things I want to tell you about in this update.

The student involvement fair is on Monday, September 18th. It is always an exciting and busy event and we are looking for anyone who would like to help us out at our table. The event goes from noon to 4PM and you can work shifts of any length. We need help with set-up and tear-down also if you are available for that.

Our tentative meeting time will be every other Tuesday at 6PM. The room and date of the first meeting are still being worked out and I will have more information for you as soon as possible.

Also, if you have not heard, Emergency Contraception is now available over the counter for women over the age of 18. While this is a milestone victory, there are still problems that younger women will face because of the age restriction. You can read more about this from Planned Parenthood at this link:

http://www.plannedparenthood.org/news-articles-press/politics-policy-issues/emergency-contraception-otc.htm

Thanks for all of the work you did to make EC more accessible for all women!

We will also be electing officers autumn quarter. Positions available are Treasurer, Secretary, and Public Relations. If you are interested in one of these positions, please contact Sarah or I. Elections will be discussed more at a future meeting.

Also, don't forget about our T-shirts and websites! T-shirts are $15 and can be purchased at a meeting or by contacting Sarah or I. Here is a link to our:

When Abortion Was a Crime
On Wednesday (5/17) Vox teamed up with the International Socialist Organization in presenting When Abortion Was a Crime. It included a panel discussion including Vox president Lauryn Shipp and International Socialist Review editor Sherry Wolf. After the panel discussion, the floor was opened to discussion of the issues presented. Discussion topics ranged from making your voice heard by government officials to sex ed to the many other facets of reproductive rights. HPV vaccine
Merck & Co. has created a vaccine called Gardasil which they claim protects against four types of HPV. This could be a huge breakthrough in sexual health because HPV is the most common sexually transmitted disease and can cause genital warts and cervical cancer. The vaccine would be given by three shots over six months, preferrably before a female becomes sexually active. Members of an FDA advisory panel are expected to recommend the drug for FDA approval later today. The efficacy of the vaccine in women already infected with HPV is being debated. After FDA approval, the national Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices will have to decide whether to recommend routine vaccination, and if so, at what age. The vaccine has sparked controversy, with some people saying vaccination would promote sexual promiscuity. Thankfully, these arguments have ceased to gain any momentum. As with any new drug, Gardasil will be expensive at an estimated $300-$500. Obviously, this poses a barrier to access. Since cervical cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer in women, it is important that we figure out a way to provide this vaccine for all women!

Thanks, Mom!
Since it's still close to Mother's Day, I want to thank my wonderful mom for donating a gajillion paper plates, cups, napkins, and flatware to Vox when I went home last weekend. (Well, to Vox and to me. Sometimes I do things with paper plates and cups that don't involve Vox. No, really!) Thanks, Mom!
